Thursday is Tisha B’Av, the 9th day of Av according to the Jewish calendar. On this day in the history of Israel:
The twelve spies came back, and ten gave the evil report which consigned the nation to forty years of wandering in the wilderness.
The first Temple, Solomon’s Temple, was destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar in 586 bc and the people were sent into exile.
The second Temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 ad. Over 1 million civilians died in the siege and destruction of Jerusalem, and the Jewish exile was begun.
The first killings of the Jews took place in Treblinka death camp in Poland in 1942.
