ESSENTIAL STUDIES.
Deuteronomy 23, Preserving the marital union
Additional studies: Deuteronomy Index
The Chiastic Structure shines a spotlight on the central axis, which is, kind treatment, and love. And kindness, and love, is at the heart of preserving the marital union. Daily kindnesses done for the other, daily asking the question, “What can I do to show love to my spouse today?” and then acting on it, helps preserve the marital union, by keeping our hearts knit to our spouses’ heart.
Isaiah 2, Separating from the ways of the East
Additional studies: Isaiah Index
Abram went west to the Holy Land from Ur, and with Abram, came the Hebraic or Biblical worldview, a dramatic shift diametrically opposed to the worldview of the East which he had left behind. Abram is the father of all who believe (Rom 4:11–12)–who believe that God is—that He exists as Creator and Ruler of the universe—and who believe Him—that His words are true—and act accordingly.
Psalm 52, Chiastic structure
Additional studies: Psalms Book Two: 42-72 Index
This psalm makes a Comparison and Contrast between the wicked with an evil tongue, and the righteous with an edifying tongue. The wickedness of the wicked, in this case, is in his evil speaking: he boasts, speaks lies and falsehoods, razor-sharp words that devour (another’s joy, or confidence, or hope). He seems to grow in might, trusting in his own riches instead of in God, but God will uproot him, no matter how deeply he attempts to sink his roots.
The righteousness of the righteous, on the other hand, is in his edifying tongue. Praise, thanksgiving, and gratitude pours out of his mouth in the assembly of the faithful. His trust is in the steadfast love of God, deeply planted in the house of God (not a dwelling of his own making) withstanding all the barbs the wicked launch his way. ♥
