Today’s chapter completes yesterday’s structure. Yesterday’s structure is still valid, but the new information suggests a rearrangement of elements:
YHVH Himself led the children of Israel into a tight place, where they were hemmed in with the sea before them, and the Egyptians behind them.
And YHVH spoke to Moses, saying: ‘Speak to the children of Israel, that they turn back and camp before Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, before Baal-zephon, over against it you shall camp by the sea.’ Exo 14:1-2
Why put them in a tight spot on purpose? The central axis reveals it. Those who do not know YHVH, can only learn who YHVH is – Redeemer and Deliverer – when He bares His mighty arm to deliver His people.
This reveals a new truth: Deliverance is unavoidable. Our praise and exaltation of YHVH, when the deliverance happens, should be unavoidable too! It is the only worthy response.
