Exo 9:22-35 {p} The plague of hail
Exo 9:22-35 chiastic structure
YHVH is teaching a people who do not know Him, who He is by these plagues. I peeked ahead to see; it turns out that each plague teaches a slightly different lesson:
The rod turned to a serpent: Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods, Exo 7:12; i.e. the power of God is greater than the power of the occult;
The river becomes blood: In this you shall know that I am YHVH, Exo 7:17; i.e., God exists and is distinct from the gods of Egypt;
The plague of frogs: That you may know that there is none like YHVH our God, Exo 8:10; i.e., the gods of Egypt cannot compare to the God of the Hebrews, who is greater than they;
The plague of gnats: The magicians said, “This is the finger of God,” Exo 8:19; i.e., the Egyptian magicians add their testimony in agreement to that of Moses and Aaron as a second witness to Pharaoh;
The plague of flies: That you may know that I am YHVH in the midst of the land, Exo 8:22; i.e., YHVH can operate freely in the land of Egypt despite the fact that it is supposed to be shielded by the gods of the Egyptians and their priesthood;
The plague on the livestock: YHVH made a division between Israel and Egypt, Exo 9:4; i.e., the gods of the Egyptians cannot shield the land of Egypt, but the God of the Hebrews can shield the dwellings of the Hebrews;
The plague of boils: That My name may be declared throughout all the earth, Exo 9:16; i.e., YHVH will become known not only in the land of Egypt, but in all the earth;
The plague of hail: That you may know that the earth is YHVH’s, Exo 9:29; i.e., as possessor of heaven and earth, YHVH can operate freely in all the earth, not only in the land of Egypt;
The plague of locusts: That Israel may know that I am YHVH, Exo 10:2; i.e., Israel may learn and remember the same lessons that are being taught to the Egyptians about YHVH;
The plague of darkness: Israel had light in all their dwellings, Exo 10:23, i.e., the sun, who all the nations worshiped as a god, the greatest god in their pantheon, is also a creation of YHVH and no god, which obeys His commands as does all other nature.
