The first occurrence.
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God hovered over the face of the waters. Gen 1:2
The primitive root.
Strong’s H4325 mayim, plural of a concrete noun meaning, “waters;” from an unnamed, unused 3-letter root, which is, according to Gesenius, mem + vav + aleph.
mem מ, ם = the water, thus chaos, mighty, blood
vav ו = the tent peg, thus add, secure, hook
aleph א = the ox head, thus strength, power, leader
The story: Water (mem) to which is added (vav) strength (aleph), i.e. waters, a great amount of water, thus sea.
