We have read of many instances where Judah was defeated by her enemies when she had forsaken YHVH.
Rehoboam, son of Solomon, by Shishak, pharaoh of Egypt (1 Kin 4:25-26);
Jehoram, son of Jehoshaphat, by a coalition of Arabians and Philistines (2 Kin 8:20-22);
Amaziah, son of Joash, by the northern kingdom of Israel (2 Kin 14:7-14);
Ahaz, son of Jotham, by Arameans (Syrians), the northern kingdom of Israel, Edomites, and Philistines (2 Kin 16:5-9).
And yet the one time her defeat seemed assured at the hands of the premier military of the age, the Assyrians, she was miraculously delivered, because she placed her trust in YHVH her God. (Teshuvah Day 32 of 40)

Seven is the number of completion, prophesying “It is finished.” Repetition is a teaching tool of Scripture, so that we do not miss the point being made. In this climate of uncertainty and oppression, take heart! Your mighty rock and firm foundation is YHVH, who will shake, but who will not be shaken, and will bring an end to wickedness, haughtiness, and oppression. ♥
John 1, Chiastic structure
Additional studies: John Index
John is saying, thinking Hebraicly:
The law came through Moses;
Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
In the Hebraic worldview, we just saw that a common way of thinking is both/ and, and it is the Greek way of thinking that must make something either/ or. The English translators, steeped in the Greek way of thinking, by inserting the “but” in the sentence where no “but” existed, made the Law and Moses opposed to grace, truth, and Christ. John is not saying, “Either the Law or Grace; either Moses or Christ;” that is the Greek worldview imposed on top of John’s words.
