ESSENTIAL STUDIES.
Leviticus 18, Separation from the customs of the Land

Molech was a gruesome and abominable idol of the Canaanites, who demanded the sacrifice of children as burnt offerings. The height of his worship was at Carthage, a Phoenician colony in North Africa. The Phoenicians were Canaanites, who established colonies in many places, sent out from Sidon and Tyre. It might be that the offspring of these forbidden relations were reserved for such sacrifice, which would explain the break in pattern in the midst of this strong theme. Be that as it may, these customs of Egypt and Canaan were practices common in the culture, not only common but promoted and admired, which God revealed as abominable and unholy. If His people have taken Him for their God, then, He says, separate yourselves from these common norms of the culture, for they defile the land and profane His name. Leviticus, far from being arcane and outdated, has much to teach us.

Although I often skewer the theology of the faith and prosperity camp, it is not that God is anti-prosperity. We learn from Torah that He is very pro-prosperity! However, the Scripture teaches us that the way to access the prosperity and blessing of God, which does not hinge one whit on what the kingdoms of this world are doing, is by obedience to His commandments. All the faith preachers I have ever heard, neglect to mention this key point. It does take faith in God to obey Him, however!

The C pair reveals that idols are the work of men’s hands, whereas heaven and earth are the work of God’s hands. The D pair reveals the fate of those who trust in worthless idols. It is helplessness, being without help in the world, for they are unable to effect help; whereas the fate of those who trust in YHVH, is help: greater and greater increase, and not only for us, but for our children as well.
