Finding Messiah in Triennial Beshalach
YHVH is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation. Exo 15:2a
“Salvation” is Strong’s H3444, yeshuwah (Yeshua’s personal name is from this word), an abstract concept meaning “salvation,” from Strong’s H3467 ישע yasha, a primitive root meaning “to save.” The 3-letter root is yud + shin + ayin:
yud י = the closed hand, thus work, throw, worship
shin ש = two front teeth, thus sharp, press, eat, two, again
ayin ע = the eye, thus watch, know, shade
The parable: Actively (yud) and sharply, diligently (shin) watching out (ayin) for danger. We have carried over this same understanding in English from the Hebrew mother tongue, when we say, “Look sharp!” to mean, Look carefully without letting anything escape your notice. The concrete noun in between the verb form “to save” and the abstract concept of “salvation,” is “shepherd,” one who rescues his flock.
The shepherd carefully watches over the flock and the surrounding area always on the lookout for danger. When a predator comes to attack, the shepherd destroys the enemy. – Ancient Hebrew Lexicon
*****
Your right hand, O YHVH, has become glorious in power; Your right hand, O YHVH, has dashed the enemy in pieces. Exo 15:6
Psalm 74, Messiah the right hand of YHVH
I heard a Messianic rabbi once teach that the Messiah is the right hand of God. So what does God do with His right hand, according to Psa 74? Break the head of the sea serpent. I immediately could not help but think of the first prophecy of Messiah, that when He comes, He will crush the head of the serpent (Gen 3:15), just as YHVH dashed His enemy in pieces.
*****
You in Your mercy have led forth the people whom You have redeemed; You have guided them in Your strength to Your holy habitation. Exo 15:13
“Redemption” is from גאל ga’al, Strong’s H1350, a verbal root meaning, “to redeem, to buy back.” The 3-letter root is gimel + aleph + lamed.
gimel ג = foot, thus foot, walk, gather
aleph א = ox head, thus strength, power, leader
lamed ל = shepherd’s staff, thus teach, yoke, to, bind
The cognate words will help us find the parable. The most common of them has the meaning of “to roll; round,” with others signifying round objects, or a circle, because to walk (gimel) as authority (aleph) has taught us (lamed) to walk, is to observe the holy days through the circle of the year, year after year. Inherent in the root is the concept of something coming around again for a second time. To redeem, then, is to let someone or something see another day, to return to their life again, to receive a second chance.
The concrete noun in between the verb form “to redeem” and the abstract concept of “redemption,” is “kinsman-redeemer,” the next of kin who redeems his relative if he comes into bondage or if he must sell his inheritance in a time of poverty. The kinsman-redeemer gives their kinsman a second chance. For us, YHVH Himself has stepped in, in Messiah Yeshua, and made Himself our Kinsman-Redeemer.
