Now we reach the heart of the “different gospel” that troubled Paul. Some men were teaching that Gentiles had to convert to Judaism first—specifically, be circumcised—before they could be saved (see Acts 15 for the fuller story). Paul calls this a perversion that brings people back into bondage.
The Chiastic Structure brings the dichotomy into stark relief.
Paul defended the gospel of grace he preached to the Gentiles, and the Jerusalem leaders (James, Peter, John) affirmed it and give him the right hand of fellowship. In Contrast, Peter himself wavered under pressure and the fear of man in Antioch.
The difference is simple.
The circumcision party taught that obedience to Moses came first, and then salvation by grace through faith in Messiah Yeshua came next.
Paul and the apostles taught that that salvation by grace through faith (‘justification,’ which happens in an instant of time), came first, and then as the believer grows in the knowledge of God, they grow into obedience (‘sanctification,’ which happens over a lifetime).
Why This Matters. In the very center stands God’s impartiality. Salvation is the same wonderful gift for everyone, by grace through faith in Messiah Yeshua.
