ESSENTIAL STUDIES.
Deuteronomy 27 and 28, The admonition to obey
Additional studies: Deuteronomy Index
God is serious about being obeyed. I know it has been taught by men that obedience to the Law has passed away, but I do not believe it. Moses does not teach that. David (Psa 119, for starters), nor Solomon teaches that (Ecc 12:13). You will find no prophet of the Hebrew Testament who teaches that (Mal 4:4, for example). You will not find Jesus (Mat 5:17-19), Paul (Rom 3:31), or the apostles teaching that (1 Joh 2:3-4). God’s message has been unchanging from the first chapter of Genesis to the last chapter of Revelation (Rev 22:14). He who does His commandments will be blessed.
Psalm 111, All His commandments are sure
Additional studies: Psalms Book Five (107-150) Index
God’s commandments stand fast—other versions say, “are upheld.” Think about these words. To be upheld is to be held in an upright position (Webster’s adds, especially against an opponent). To stand is to be upright upon your feet. To stand fast is to remain upright even in the face of opposition or enemies who are trying to knock you down or push you back. But God not only upholds His commandments, He does so forever and ever. He does so for a limitless time, at all times, continually. Now perhaps you can see why the doctrine which says the commandments of God have passed away is not a doctrine derived from Scripture, or from a correct understanding of Scripture!
Mark 5, The Individual in the Midst of a Throng
Additional studies: Mark Index
The central axis puzzled me at first. It seems an insignificant detail of the story, and that it would be THE central point of the whole structure? But then I realized, God has a throng following Him. But in the middle of that throng, His attention is on the individual, the single person, who reaches out to Him in faith, and touches Him.
