God did not just establish David’s authority over Israel, but David, whenever he went to war against other peoples around him, defeated them, because YHVH preserved David wherever he went. In the timeline of the Ancient Near East found in All Through the Ages, Israel is listed as the world power from 1100 to 900ish BC, before the rise of Assyria as a conquering nation (even though you will not find Israel listed as a world power in most modern history books), and this is why. Israel under David and Solomon was a great kingdom, whose fame and fear was spread abroad.
In the ancient days, when one people was defeated by another, life went on as it always had, but they paid the conquering king tribute. The defeated king was obligated to send a set amount annually to the conquering king. The defeated king obtained this amount by taxing his own people (usually). This is why the nations brought gits to David.

And now we know why waiting on YHVH is a pair with trusting in Him and taking refuge in Him. Placing our trust in YHVH surrounds us as with a wall, so that we are secure from one sunset to the next while we wait, looking at Him whose deliverance is forthcoming.
