ESSENTIAL STUDIES.
Jeremiah 22, Chiastic structure and historical background
Additional studies: Jeremiah Index
This chapter was written at a time when Jeconiah was king in his father’s place (Jer 22:24). The reason it seems to also be speaking as if Jehoiakim was still king before his death, was that the first part of the chapter was in the scroll that Jehoiakim burned. After that, the LORD commanded Jeremiah to write the scroll again, with all the words that were on the first scroll (Jer 36:28). When he did, he added the prophecy about Jeconiah, so show the king that what had been prophesied about both his uncle and his father had come to pass, therefore what was prophesied about Jeconiah would also come to pass, unless he repent.
Psalm 111, All His commandments are sure
Additional studies: Psalms Book Five: 107-150 Index
In other words, when the word of God says “All His commandments are sure,” it is really saying that the whole of God’s commandments are able to build us up and support us; meditating on them and doing them enables us to be fostered and nourished, as a parent or a (wet) nurse forsters and nourishes a child — they are our spiritual food, they cause us to grow thereby. They are absolutely true in a world where morality is relative. They render the one who walks in them firm. On Christ (the Word made Flesh) the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand. That kind of firm.
Hebrews 4, There remains a rest
Additional studies: Hebrews Index
The writer of Hebrews is making the point that the rest established on the seventh day from the foundation of the world is History that Prophesies of a future rest, which Joshua did not fulfill by bringing Israel into the Promised Land. There remains, therefore, a rest for the people of God to enter.
The physical rest prophesies of the spiritual rest we have in Messiah (Mat 11:28-30). Now that we have spiritual rest, do we abolish physical rest? No, and there is no passage which tells us they are mutually exclusive. For as long as we have physical bodies living in this physical, natural universe, we continue to need physical rest.
