ESSENTIAL STUDIES.
Ezekiel 5 and 6, YHVH seeking repentance
Additional studies: Ezekiel Index
Ezekiel is beginning like Isaiah, and Jeremiah: God is revealing to the captives what they have done. Why is this so important, to provide a list of sins each time? The captives are in captivity, so why hasn’t God put the past in the past and forgotten about it? It is because of repentance. There can be no repentance, no turning away from, unless there is first a knowledge of what has been done that needs turning away from. Since there can be no forgiveness and erasing of the past, without repentance first, this is an act of love on God’s part. He is trying to get to the forgiveness and forgetting, so He is putting the knowledge of Israel’s sin before her face, so that she can repent.
Psalm 119:129-136, Chiastic structure

D pair: Be merciful to me / let no iniquity have dominion over me. There is more to our walk with God than merely forgiveness of sins already committed (mercy). As we receive mercy and grace, we also begin to walk in the power of His Spirit. Miracles are a part of that as service and outreach to others. But the power of the Spirit for ourselves is in empowering us over sin, so that iniquities no longer have dominion over us.
Hebrews 12, The heavenly city
Additional studies: Hebrews Index
The writer of Hebrews tells us that the city in which we have citizenship, we who are sojourners on the earth, does not exist here, in this age. We are citizens of a city which is still to come on this earth. The Pilgrims who settled America had a dream to build an earthly city in which earthly citizenship and heavenly citizenship harmonized, but it did not last. Here, in this age, we do not have a lasting city. Augustine of Hippo took inspiration from Hebrews when he wrote his book, The City of God. In it, he showed that there were really only two cities and two kinds of citizens: the city of God and those who dwell in it, who have heavenly citizenship, not of this earth; and the city of man which is always in opposition to God.
