I admit that recent installments of why we homeschool have focused on the threat that predator teachers can be to our children. Today, this story (Broken link, active August 21, 2006) reminds us that the other students, some of whom have been raised with little accountability and self- control, can be every bit as dangerous.
After recounting the vicious attack perpetrated by a six-year- old, in which the victim was so badly hurt she had to be rushed to the hospital, the article concludes with this statement:
Deputies say they have no plans right now to charge this boy with any kind of a crime. They say right now what he needs is counseling.
Right now what he needs is a put the fear of God in you spanking, and also after school and weekend work for the next twelve years to pay the hospital bills for this lady. More than that, this boy is in crying need for a bit of stiff and unyielding law in his life. The parents have not been giving it to him, the school is too afraid of child abuse charges to give it to him, and now the authorities will not give it to him either.
Church, this is what society becomes when we only apply grace to sin. The law is necessary, and the fear of a holy God is necessary, otherwise every man will do what is right in his own eyes. You do not want to live in that nightmare world. The law is our schoolmaster, to keep us until the day we arrive at repentance, and then grace following that repentance. But each in its order: repentance does not come without law first, and grace cannot come without repentance first.
