What does it mean to stand fast in the faith? I thought it interesting that the admonition to stand fast makes the first bookends for the 1 Cor 15 chiastic structure, but the central portion all has to do with the resurrection and the coming kingdom of God. For the admonition to stand fast is to those believers who face the threat of persecution or death because of their faith – just as Christians around the world, but especially in the Middle East in our day, do. When you are free to practice your faith without reprisal, then it is easy to hold to it. But if practicing puts you in the crosshairs of the enemy, then we must be brave and be strong, in order to do those simple things – gather with believers, own a Bible, abstain from worship of idols – that we take for granted. What helps to stand fast, then, is to know that, yes, you might be beheaded today, but your life in Christ goes on, only now it is in His kingdom and not in the kingdoms of the world any longer.
