Deu 7:12-26
This section contains these two paragraphs, a weak and a strong, making one of the strong themes of Scripture:
7:12-16 {s} Obedience to YHVH’s commandments = life and blessing for Israel
7:17-26 {p} Disobedience to YHVH = death and destruction for the nations
Its structure:
The central axis of the structure is a reminder of what YHVH did for Israel in bringing them out of Egypt. It is a prophetic type of God bringing us out of the kingdom of darkness, and slavery to sin. It is a natural picture of our spiritual salvation. Moreover, He brought them out by a mighty hand, and an outstretched arm. Consider that the mighty hand and outstretched arm of YHVH is Messiah Yeshua.
Oh, sing to YHVH a new song!
For He has done marvelous things;
His right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory. Psa 98:1
The word translated “victory” in Hebrew is yasha, Strong’s H3467, a primitive verbal root, not a noun, literally meaning, “to save.” From The Hebrew Roots Dictionary:
Yasha is the root of Messiah’s name, Yeshua. The “hand” depicted by the yud is the agent of action, and as such, it is Messiah Yeshua, that is, YHVH incarnate, who put on flesh and did marvelous things, gaining Him the salvation of His people.
Deu 8:1-20
One of the Hebrew paragraph divisions in this section of Scripture, is:
8:1-18 {p} Remember YHVH, obey Him, and live
It makes a chiastic structure (as do most if not all of the Hebrew paragraph divisions):
This paragraph reveals Messiah, especially in the E pairs:
1E) 8:3B-4 PROVISION IN THE WILDERNESS: the word from the mouth of YHVH;
2E) 8:15B PROVISION IN THE WILDERNESS: water out of the rock;
YHVH’s provision in the wilderness for His people, is Messiah Yeshua – He is the Word which proceeds from the mouth of YHVH, full of grace and truth (Joh 1:14). He is the water from the rock (1 Cor 10:4). He is bread from heaven (Joh 6:32-35), and living water (Joh 4:13-14)!
Deu 9:1-10:11
This section forms a chiastic structure:
The central axis of the chiastic structure is unusual: a sentence fragment about Aaron and Eleazar, ministering as priests. In this brief fragment the death of the High Priest is mentioned, and also that the Son ministers as High Priest. That is a prophecy of Messiah Yeshua – He is our High Priest, and His death ratifies the covenant in His blood. He is also the Son, ministering as High Priest. This central axis is furthermore wrapped in the ark of the covenant, which is mercy covering over the Law – a clear prophecy of the gospel of grace by faith.
But there is a second prophecy of Messiah Yeshua embedded in this structure. The place names to which Israel journeyed, the D pairs, have meanings in Hebrew.
And the children of Israel journeyed from Beeroth-benejaakan to Moserah … Deu 10:6a
Bene Jaakan = sons of “let him oppress them,” an Edomite;
Moserah = bonds;
From there they journeyed unto Gudgod; and from Gudgod to Jotbah, a land of brooks of water. Deu 10:7
Gudgodah = the cutting place;
Jotbathah = goodness or pleasantness.
If we were to translate the place names into English, we find that Deu 10:6-7 reads,
Israel journeyed from the wells (of bitter water) of the sons of the oppressor, to the place of bondage. There the High Priest died; the Son being the High Priest. That is the place of cutting off, and from there Israel journeyed to the place of pleasantness and goodness, a land of rivers (of sweet water).
The gospel of grace through faith in Messiah Yeshua!
Deu 10:12-11:25
Therefore you shall lay up these words of Mine in your heart and in your soul, and bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. Deu 11:18
God has never wanted the commandments to stay on two tablets of stone, but from the beginning, He has wanted His Word in our hearts. His Word is a Seed (Mar 4:14), the Promised Seed, the Messiah (Joh 1:14), for it is only from a heart transformed by Messiah, by God’s love, which loves YHVH God in return, can transformed actions (hand) and thoughts (between the eyes) proceed.
True obedience flows from a heart transformed by His love, transformed by His Word, transformed by the indwelling of Messiah, and it is not only natural, but a joy to love Him back through obedience, not because we are trying to earn inclusion, acceptance, approval, righteousness, or salvation. But because we are grateful that He loves us, has saved us, and has made us His own!
