ESSENTIAL STUDIES.
Deuteronomy 1 and 2, Introduction to the book
Additional studies: Deuteronomy Index
Moses is encouraging the second generation, not to make the same mistake that the first generation made. The reason the first generation gave for not going in to possess the land, was that there were giants in the land (the Anakim). Moses is saying, Listen, there were giants who dwelt in Mount Seir before Esau, but because the LORD has given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession, Esau defeated the giants. There were giants who dwelt in Moab before the Moabites, but because the LORD has given Moab to the children of Lot, they defeated the giants. There were giants who dwelt in Ammon before the Ammonites, but because the LORD has given Ammon to the children of Lot, they defeated the giants. The unspoken message is, the people who do not even have a covenant with YHVH as you do, defeated the giants who were in the land before them, because the LORD dispossessed the giants. How much more will you, who walk in covenant with the LORD your God, dispossess the giants before you?
1 Kings 14, Chiastic Structure
Additional studies: 1 and 2 Kings Index
The Chiastic Structure having to do with the entire reigns of Rehoboam and Jeroboam have as its central axis, that Jeroboam sent his wife to inquire of YHVH from the prophet Ahijah, when their son fell ill. Why would that be what the Holy Spirit places neon flashing lights around?
It merely points out in stark relief, that Jeroboam knew that the idols he had made were no gods at all. Otherwise, why not go to them to inquire? It is because, being false, there would be no answer, as Jeroboam well knew. When the rubber met the road, he sent his wife to the only true God, who would answer, and whose answer would come to pass.
Psalm 17, The apple of YHVH’s eye
Additional studies: Psalms Book One: 1-41 Index
The common phrase ‘apple of the eye’ comes into English from the Hebrew Bible. Its meaning refers to something valued above all other things. The Hebrew idiom literally means ‘little man of the eye,’ referring to the tiny reflection of yourself that you can see in another’s eye. If you are the apple of someone’s eye, that someone is focusing on you and closely watching all things concerning you.
