ESSENTIAL STUDIES.
2 Samuel 24, The Prophetic Type for Messiah
Additional studies: 1 and 2 Samuel Index
Propitiation is the act of satisfying God’s righteous anger against sin, uniquely fulfilled through the atoning sacrifice of Messiah’s death on the cross. It was the means by which God’s justice was satisfied, thus turning away His wrath from sinners and reconciling them to Himself. And see 2 Sam 1:1-24:25 Reverse Parallelism, for the book of 2 Samuel.
Proverbs 18, A broken spirit or a merry heart
Additional studies: Proverbs Index
The Scripture is Contrasting a broken spirit with a merry heart. Merry, an adjective, is from Strong’s H8055, שמח samach, “to rejoice.” Its Hebrew Root Word parable is that when water (mem) lies on the fields outside (chet), it glistens in the sun, becoming bright. Thus the parable: to turn (sin, as one turns away from a thorn if it is encountered in the path) to a glistening (mem + chet) aspect, or countenance. The last thing someone with a broken spirit feels like doing, is rejoicing. But this is why the Bible says:
Whoever offers the sacrifice of thanksgiving honors Me; and to him who orders his way aright I will show the salvation of God. Psa 50:23
Luke 1, All things in order
Additional studies: Luke Index
Many people tell new believers to read the gospel of John first. I don’t. John is full of difficult theology that requires an understanding of the Hebrew Testament in order to grasp. Luke was not an eyewitness. But he investigated all things from the very first, and set all the events in Jesus’ life down in order. Luke’s gospel is chronological. Luke is the closest we can come to a biography in the sense that we are used to: a chronological narrative of a life. Luke will give you the history of who Jesus was and what He said and did, straight and simple. ♥
