Read Numbers 32 at Bible Gateway.
Let’s take stock of where we are. The Amorites are defeated, the Midianites are defeated, and Israel is poised on the border of the Promised Land. In Numbers 32 the subject finally turns to the inheritance of the Land.
Inheritance in the Hebrew is from Strong’s H5157, נחל nachal (nun + chet + lamed), meaning, “to receive an inheritance.”
nun נ = seed (continue, heir, son)
chet ח = wall (outside, divide, half)
lamed ל = shepherd’s staff (teach, yoke, to, bind)
The Hebrew Root Word parable is of the heir (nun) receiving what has been divided (chet) to him by his father (lamed).
WHY THIS MATTERS.
Father God promised this land to Abraham and his seed as an inheritance (Gen 13:14-17). That initial promise is the beginning of a magnificent thread, a Common Theme woven all through Scripture pointing straight to Yeshua, the Promised Seed.
Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for Your possession. Psa 2:8
The writer of Hebrews picks up the same melody:
God … has in these last days spoken unto us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things … who being the brightness of His glory, and the express image of His person … when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high, being made so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. Heb 1:1-4
And honestly? That would have been enough; but our generous God did not stop there. Through Yeshua the promise of inheritance flows to every one of His children. That’s you and me!
And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. Gal 3:29
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Mat 5:5
As Israel inherits their promise, we’re glimpsing far more than ancient geography. We’re seeing the open hand of our Father giving good gifts to His children. He has already given us the greatest inheritance of all in Messiah Yeshua!
