Read Psalm 62 at Bible Gateway.
Today’s unusual structure is a 3-part theme repeated twice for emphasis, ending with a conclusion which is not repeated:
1a) Psa 62:1, Truly my soul silently waits for God; From Him comes my salvation;
1b) Psa 62:2, He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved;
1c) Psa 62:3-4, The folly of the wicked:
Psa 62:3a, How long will you attack a man? You shall be slain, all of you; {n}
Psa 62:3b, Like a leaning wall and a tottering fence;
Psa 62:4a, They only consult to cast him down from his high position; they delight in lies; {n}
Psa 62:4b, They bless with their mouth, But inwardly they curse. Selah
2a) Psa 62:5, My soul, wait silently for God alone, For my expectation is from Him;
2b) Psa 62:6-8, He only is my rock + salvation + refuge:
Psa 62:6, He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved;
Psa 62:7, In God is my salvation and my glory; the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God;
Psa 62:8a, Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; {n}
Psa 62:8b, God is a refuge for us. Selah
2c) Psa 62:9-10, The vanity of the wicked man’s trust:
Psa 62:9a, Surely men of low degree are a vapor, Men of high degree are a lie; {n}
Psa 62:9b, If they are weighed on the scales, They are altogether lighter than vapor;
Psa 62:10a, Do not trust in oppression, Nor vainly hope in robbery; {n}
Psa 62:10b, If riches increase, Do not set your heart on them.
conclusion) Psa 62:11-12, Power + mercy belongs to God:
Psa 62:11, God has spoken once, Twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God;
Psa 62:12, Also to You, O Lord, belongs mercy; For You render to each one according to his work. {p}
The theme of the entire psalm might be said to be, the folly and vanity of the trust of the wicked (wicked acts, status, oppression, robbery, riches) and the wisdom and surety of the trust of the righteous (in God alone, His power and mercy). ♥
