Read Galatians 4 at Bible Gateway.
The heartbeat of Galatians 4 is the joyful truth of the Gospel of grace by faith in Messiah Yeshua.
God’s people were once like children under the guardian of the Law, exactly as if we were slaves. The Law taught us God’s righteous ways and showed us our need for a Savior.
But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, to redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. Gal 4:4-5
Because Yeshua paid the redemption price for us in His own blood, God has now adopted us as His own beloved children. And the proof of that adoption? He has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying “Abba, Father!” (Gal 4:6-7).
In fact, the Scripture itself resolves into a beautiful Chiastic Structure confirming the Contrast:
This breathtaking change happens just as Ezekiel prophesied: God would give us a new heart with His Law written on it, and put His own Spirit inside us (‘the Spirit of His Son into our hearts’) so that we want to walk in His commandments (Eze 36:26-27).
Obeying the Law written without on tablets of stone, while the sin nature ruled within, results in frustration and fleshly works. But obeying the Law written within on the tablets of our hearts is second nature, resulting in a joy-filled life.
The heart transplant throws God’s good Law and His ways into stark relief against the man-made weak and beggarly elements of the world. Paul was grieved when the Galatians were tempted to substitute the bondage of man’s traditions for the freedom of trust in Messiah and walking in Messiah’s Spirit—the Spirit of adoption as sons.
Why This Matters. You are not a slave trying hard to measure up. You are a dearly loved son or daughter, already accepted because of what Yeshua has done. The same Spirit who raised Messiah from the dead now lives in you, empowering you to walk in God’s ways with joy instead of fear or frustration. Trust and obey—both flow naturally when you know whose child you are.
